Queen of Katwe large posterWalt Disney Pictures’ Queen Katwe opens in theaters nationwide this Friday, September 30. Queen of Katwe is based on a true story of young Phiona Mutesi from the poor rural community of Katwe, Uganda. She amazes others and herself when she rises out of poverty through the vehicle of  the game of chess.  Phiona’s family and community support her and instill in her  what she needs to pursue her dream and become an international chess champion.

Nyong’o, who plays Phiona’s mother, she said about the film’s inspirational qualities, “I think this film is a lot about the power of dreams. That’s the center of the film. And then there’s a tug of war between love and fear. And I think for Harriett, Harriett comes from a place where to love is to fear for those you love. And she has to come to a place where she recognizes that that fear is what is holding her child back and let go of that fear in order to really express her love that can take her child to where she needs to go.”

The film was directed by Mira Nair. It is from a screenplay by William Wheeler, Queen of Katwe. The movie was produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher and John Carls. Will Weiske and Troy Buder served as executive producers.

Queen of Katwe also has a soundtrack on Walt Dinsey Records featuring Grammy award winning recording artist/songwriter Alicia Keys’ new original song, “Back to Life. ” The uplifting “Back to Life” was written by Alicia Keys, Carlo Montagnese and Billy Walsh, and produced by Illangelo and Keys.

Queen of Katwe is family entertainment film that will encourage you to go after your dreams, no matter where you come from. Take your kids to see it. It will empower them.
