The Soul Mate Experiment: A Fresh, Soulful Spin on Black Love for Today’s Dating World

If you love Black romance films that make you laugh, feel, and cheer for love’s second (or third) chances, get ready, because a new one is on the way. Hidden Gem Entertainment and Silver Lining Entertainment just wrapped production on The Soul Mate Experiment, and let me tell you… this one is bringing all the warmth, humor, and emotional depth we’ve been missing on screen.

Produced by powerhouse Angela White, p.g.a., and written, directed, and Executive Produced by the always intentional, always heartfelt storyteller Tamera Hill, the film is led by a standout cast: Erica Peeples, Brad James, David Banner, Teresa Celeste, and Cocoa Brown. Together, they deliver a story that feels real, relatable, and very much rooted in today’s conversations around dating, connection, and what it really takes to show up in love.

A Love Story for the App Era — But With Soul

The Soul Mate Experiment follows Tammy (Erica Peeples) and Vincent (Brad James), two singles tired of the swipe-left, swipe-right world. Instead of playing dating games, they make a bold choice: lean into vulnerability and agree to fall in love on their own terms.

What starts as a “let’s just see what happens” kind of experiment turns into a funny, messy, emotional ride full of “oh wow, that’s real” moments. The film doesn’t shy away from the awkwardness, the fear, the joy, and the truth-telling that love requires.

While Tammy and Vincent explore new love, we also witness the other side of the journey — marriage, through Trey (David Banner) and Angie (Teresa Celeste). At their fifth anniversary, they’re balancing secrets, disappointments, and the question every couple faces: How do we keep choosing each other?

Together, these two storylines give us a fuller picture of Black love, new, seasoned, struggling, healing, and still trying.

Writer/director Tamera Hill has built a reputation for crafting films that feel emotionally honest from Netflix’s Never Heard to the upcoming The Secret Between Us (Fall 2025). With The Soul Mate Experiment, she leans again into authenticity and spiritual truth while still giving us tender humor and cultural richness.

Hill says:

“The Soul Mate Experiment explores whether love is destiny or design. Through laughter, healing, and connection, it reminds us that sometimes the boldest thing you can do is follow your heart.”

And that’s exactly the kind of storytelling Black audiences have been asking for — grown, grounded, and beautifully human.

Producer Angela White stays booked and busy — and most importantly, she’s intentional about elevating Black stories, Black storytellers, and Black audiences. With more than 45 films in her catalog, she has two Lifetime Original Movies that have already premiered, Terry McMillan Presents: Preach, Pray, Love andThe two-part event Friends and Lovers (Nov. 15–16)

Now, with The Soul Mate Experiment, she and Silver Lining Entertainment continue that mission: showcasing fresh narratives, empowering filmmakers, and giving us more romantic, layered, and joyful depictions of Black love.

If you’re a fan of love stories with heart, humor, and cultural sweetness, keep this one on your radar. The Soul Mate Experiment is shaping up to be the kind of Black romance film we’ll be talking about and revisiting for a long time.
